The Travels Speed system in Japan has an advanced network of seismic sensors.
On March 11, 2011, one of these sensors sensed an earthquake measuring 8.9 Richter just 12 seconds before and sent a signal to 33 moving trains, which stopped them in seconds.
As a result of this system only one train derailed on this day.
